The Beaver County Marcellus Awareness Community (BCMAC) was established in 2011 by a group of concerned citizens right here in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Alarmed by the potential environmental and health risks posed by fracking near the Ambridge Reservoir—a critical source of our community’s drinking water—we came together to protect our shared resources. The discovery that 1,400 acres within the watershed had been leased for natural gas drilling spurred us into action, and BCMAC was born out of our commitment to safeguard the well-being of our neighbors and environment.
Since our founding, BCMAC has grown into a strong and determined grassroots organization, focused on protecting public health and the environment from the impacts of fracking and the petrochemical buildout in our region. Our early work involved educating the public and local leaders, organizing petition drives, and hosting public meetings. These efforts led to significant successes, including persuading two municipalities to adopt source water protection plans, ensuring better safeguards for the Ambridge Reservoir and its surrounding areas.
In 2017, we expanded our vision by co-sponsoring the Re-Imagine! Beaver County initiative. This program was designed to engage our community in envisioning a future that embraces sustainable, non-fossil-fuel businesses and industries. It was a natural extension of our ongoing mission to promote environmental justice and work towards a healthier, more sustainable Beaver County. Today, Re-Imagine! Beaver County has grown into its own organization, continuing the vital work of fostering a sustainable and just economic future for our region, while BCMAC remains a committed supporter in this shared mission.
Throughout our history, BCMAC has remained deeply engaged with the community. We’ve participated in fairs, festivals, and public events, presenting petitions and testimonies to local, state, and federal officials. Our advocacy efforts continue to focus on the health, safety, and well-being of Beaver County residents as we confront the challenges posed by industrial pollution and the expanding petrochemical industry. We are proud to be a voice for our community, standing up for stronger environmental protections and a safer future for all.
